old video memoirs

Shaky videos (sorry for the quality) recovered from an ancient memory card.

I miss playing with Mori. I am glad he is doing fine and getting fatter than ever!
He loves to play with his teddy. It's so fun to mess around with him when he is being anti-social and snobby.
I miss hugging my baby piglet. <3

This next clip is from one of the art classes i used to conduct several years ago.
We were trying to record a storytelling session using the artworks they made but the kids
weren't in the mood, hahah.
I just love kids. I miss teaching. :)

seascape, dusk and dawn

The latest session befits the week's scorching heat.

My student's seascape and dawn in pastel:

I also did quick drawings: seascape and dusk.

of blurry mountains

Sunlight, when high on the sky, creates a wide tonal contrast - dark shadows and bright highlights. But even on a bright day, distance or atmospheric perspective affects the tonal value and colours of the objects that are further away than those in the foreground. This is what we have studied in class for our latest plate. Dovi's a quick learner. She have never done any landscape before but she managed to finish this.

She did the bright noon.

I did the late afternoon while watching her progress.

Here's the homework i gave her last session. The butterfly is so detailed!

keep the wheel turning

my student's first try on the pies

Making color wheel looks easy but consider how relatively tricky color is and you may find yourself wondering if you had the exact amount of color and the correctness of its complementary match. Back in college, Color Theory is one of the hardest subjects in art studies. Learning color is a difficult feat, it ate my brains out. It challenged my critical thinking and perception. So i had this wicked idea heh, to make it the topic of our third session.

Important points:
~ Mix to get the perfect primary colors. Don't rely on the paint tubes. Not all content infos can be trusted, you'll just get a murky shade out of mixing two.
~ To get the right middle color, mix 1/2 and 1/2 not two wholes.
ex. middle gray = 1/2 pigment of black + 1/2 pigment of white
~ Understanding color context is essential in knowing color contrast and how color behaves in relation to other colors.
~ A visual impact of a color depends on the relative lightness and intensity of the hues.

In irrelevance to this nerdy post, i give you furs-rrrr ...

shading and other matters

We did this activity for Day 1. First - to test how much they know about drawing and second - to figure out how can i effectively execute my teaching to work with both students who have different styles in drawing. Dovie likes to do doodle art while Sheena is into realistic line drawings. It'll be too hard for me to split them into two sessions (not to mention how tight my schedule weekly) so i decided to accept the pairing. We started with the basic: shading, types of shading and tonal value. I thought it's interesting to apply the first lesson using their own styles. I'm not the type who dictates what result i want to see to the point of being pushy. It'll be good to learn the basics and at the same time enjoy the creative freedom.

Shading using an egg as a model, pointing out the importance of establishing the source of light, form shadow and cast shadow:

Dovie's

My egg (did a quick drawing while giving pointers and waiting for them to finish :))

We don't have a real flower so i improvised a flower model using a clay:
Sheena's

Dovie's

Mine

And lastly, i asked them to apply shading this time by drawing a face:
Sheena's Mary

Dovie's vintage girl

And because i'm the teacher, i can get away with everything by just doing random hair, hahah.

Since they are both fast learners, i plan to proceed next to colour illustration. I was seriously fazed during our first day. Aside from the fact that i'm a shy person and i'm not really a good speaker, i'm a little worried (conscious is another word heh) about my own teaching (which means i have to study more stuff to be an effective tutor). However, I will try my best.
I'm realy looking forward to see how they'll do in painting.

the book hug and a burping pop-out

Meet the bookworm twins..

See, these book buddies hug!

And we ended the class with this pop-out greeting card that can eat a plate of mojos.

I'd like to do these, one of these days:
moss
more moss!

Recycle old papers, make a forest happy, try the table-top book buddies :)

monday randoms

During the last two classes, we focused on making crafts out of used stuff, like old newspapers, old beads (i found webbing in my super old thread chest). Good practice to teach the kids not to over-shop for art supplies if they have so many things lying in their home that they can use. And also to welcome them in the idea that each one of us, young or old, have our own responsibilities pro-nature.

Now guess what we used when we made these:

I finally met the hardest origami i've ever lost my wits on.
